Gynecology & Obstetrics

Obstetrics and gynaecology encompasses the two subspecialties of obstetrics and gynaecology.

The Gynecology and Obstetrics (Ob/Gyn) department in a medical college is dedicated to the study, diagnosis, treatment, and management of conditions related to the female reproductive system, pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care. This department plays a critical role in preparing medical students to understand and address the unique health needs of women, ranging from menstrual and hormonal disorders to complications of pregnancy and labor. The curriculum combines a strong foundation in basic sciences like anatomy, physiology, and pathology with clinical training in obstetrics (care during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period) and gynecology (care of the female reproductive system). Students learn both medical and surgical approaches to managing common and complex conditions in women’s health, with an emphasis on patient-centered care.

In the Gynecology and Obstetrics department, students begin their education with in-depth knowledge of the female reproductive system, including the anatomy and physiology of the ovaries, uterus, cervix, and vagina. They study the menstrual cycle, fertility, hormonal regulation, and the pathophysiology of common gynecological conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, fibroids, and pelvic inflammatory disease. Students also explore the principles of obstetrics, which involve understanding the stages of pregnancy, normal and high-risk pregnancies, labor, and delivery. They are introduced to the diagnosis and management of common pregnancy-related complications, such as preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, and ectopic pregnancies. Clinical rotations are an essential component of the curriculum, where students participate in outpatient clinics, labor wards, and gynecology surgeries, gaining firsthand experience in patient assessment, diagnosis, and treatment.

Obstetrics training focuses on the care of pregnant women and involves a variety of hands-on experiences. Students are taught to monitor fetal growth and health, manage labor and delivery, and provide postpartum care. They are trained in performing routine prenatal check-ups, interpreting ultrasound images, and detecting complications like fetal distress, abnormal presentations, and preterm labor. Students also gain practical skills in conducting deliveries, whether vaginal or via cesarean section, under supervision. The department emphasizes the importance of managing both normal and complicated pregnancies and providing evidence-based care. Students learn how to manage obstetric emergencies such as postpartum hemorrhage, shoulder dystocia, and neonatal resuscitation, which are critical for ensuring both maternal and fetal health during labor and delivery.

Gynecology training within the department involves learning the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of female reproductive health issues. This includes performing gynecological exams, screening for cervical cancer with Pap smears, managing menstrual disorders like amenorrhea or menorrhagia, and treating conditions like fibroids, ovarian cysts, and pelvic organ prolapse. Students are introduced to various treatment options, from pharmacological interventions like hormone therapy to surgical procedures such as hysterectomies, laparoscopy, and minimally invasive treatments. Additionally, students are trained in the management of female cancers, including breast, ovarian, and cervical cancers, which often require a multidisciplinary approach involving surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. The department emphasizes the importance of prevention, early detection, and patient education, particularly in areas such as contraception, family planning, and sexual health.
